Chief Wedlidi Speck
Wedlidi's cultural roots span the Kwakwaka’wakw, Nuuchanulth, and North Vancouver Island Coast Salish. Through his cultural mentorship, Wedlidi focuses on Identity, culture, rights, and responsibility to restore the ‘na’mima family to their rightful place in the socio-cultural landscape.
Wedlidi is recognized for his hereditary roles and responsibilities as a speaker, trainer and family man. Aligning with Indigenous perspectives, he traditionally defines family through the ‘na’mima system (extended family). He is a brother to many and an uncle to many more.
Currently, Wedlidi works for the Royal BC Museum as the Vice President of People, Culture and Reconciliation. Wedlidi draws on his extensive cultural and spiritual training to become an Indigenous cultural safety facilitator. He utilizes storytelling, circle practice, and cultural ritual. He also uses “art of hosting” methods to engage participants, focusing on illuminating group leadership and wisdom.
Wedlidi is known for his cultural interest in genealogy and, more recently DNA studies.
